Just over a week after that crucial quarter final match against Brockington College, where Malet Lambert won 10-3, the Year 9 boys team will be playing their semi-final this afternoon against Honley School from Huddersfield.
Both teams will be fighting hard for their place in the final, which is usually held at a famous premiership ground in England.
The lads are still fired up from their grand win last week, and from meeting Hull City's Tom Huddlestone in the process, so hopefully this will give them an extra boost towards victory.
Year 11 student Harry Dixon was at last week's match to support the lads, and he wrote a match report too. Let's remind ourselves of their storming victory before this week's game...
"Malet Lambert School of East Hull entertained Brockington College of Leicester in the PlayStation Schools Cup tie of the round. This included a visit from Hull City midfielder Tom Huddlestone who inspired Malet according to Captain Billy Chadwick, who said, “The key to our success has been hard work. It gave us a lot of confidence with Tom Huddlestone coming down to watch us.”
As well as Huddlestone Malet pupils, staff and parents turned out in force to support the side.
All this build up must have created nerves and they showed as Malet made an edgy start to the match and went behind little over three minutes in as Brockingtons’ striker rounded Malet goalkeeper Adam Shimmin for an easy tap in. Malet soon hit back as Harvey Tolbert played a chipped ball through to his strike partner Jacob Todd who placed a low side footed shot into the bottom corner. Chadwick put Malet into the lead with a similar shot to Todd’s, which had been set up by a slick passing move started by Chadwick. Malet had several chances to extend their lead but failed to pounce and were punished by a clinical Brockington striker who fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner. The first half ended with neither side being creative enough to carve out an opportunity.
In the second half Malet were a completely different side and stunned Brockington with a spectacular fifteen minute spell which saw them open up an unassailable gap and plant one foot into the Semi-Final. Chadwick started it all off with a 20 yard curling free kick into the top corner. This was soon bettered by Chadwick as he cannoned a 25 yard free kick from the right hand side of the box into the far post and into the net thus giving him his hat trick.
Once again Chadwick was proving his worth as he followed up four deflections tenaciously to earn a tap in and his fourth. Todd continued the scoring with two of his own - one an exquisite volley, which earned him his hat trick. After this period, Malet took the sting out of Brockingtons’ tail with another goal from Chadwick, who hit a powerful low drive into the bottom corner. Sub striker Alex Kellington got his name on the score sheet with a composed finish late on. Brockington never gave in and did find the back of the net once more through a powerful header that looped into the corner of the goal. However, Malet had the final say through Todd who produced his best goal of the day as he rifled a vicious shot into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper standing.
Malet proceed to the Semi-Final where they face Honley High School of Huddersfield, in which they will be at home on a ground they rarely lose at."
