Businesses in and around hull came to Malet Lambert to talk to Year 6 students yesterday during transition week, as part of the Business in the Community Discover Me programme, which encourages school pupils think about their futures.
Laura, an events coordinator, from Business in the Community has come to talk about setting goals, how important they are and how they can achieve them. She is talking about SMART goals. SMART is an acronym.
S = specific
M = measureable
A = achievable
R = relevant
T = time bound
She has set a task for the students; they must set 2 goals, which are SMART, they have to explain for both why that goal is important, how the will achieve it and how it will make you feel once you have completed it.
One student has set a goal to be in the Malet Lambert rugby team. He has set this goal because he is interested in rugby and he wants to play the sport.
Another student wants to be better at his trampoline lessons; he can achieve this by going to all of his lessons and practicing.
A third has set a goal to have a job in architecture. To do this he has to get a higher grade in maths, art and science.
A second task that has been set is that Laura reads a list of skills needed for different jobs and the students have to choose the right job from a list that has been written on the board.
Kit Hargreaves, from Apple Pear, is talking about what you need to do as a manager of a business and why they are important. He is also talking about the type of people we are and the different skills we need.
As many of the students in the classroom are interested in football he is using various positions in football, e.g. goalkeeper, striker and the captain, to explain the different roles in a business. The students have lots of great out-of-the-box ideas when thinking about what the football positions could be as the roles of a business.
After discussing for thirty seconds, the students identified which position they are and formed a group with at least one of each position. They have been set a task to think of a product they could ‘sell’ and they also have to think of what each person has to do to make this a ‘reality’ at the end of the fifteen minutes each group had to present their ideas
One group have ‘invented’ a new pair of shoes which can make you jump higher and run faster at the push of a button. They have made different prices depending on the size of shoes they have also designed it in a range of different colours.
Each of the groups had to answer questions about the topics they haven’t included in their presentation.
