The day started with pupils receiving their very first university lecture, before moving on to take part in a number of higher education activities set up by the university. During the morning session pupils learned about what it would be like to live at university, discussed the differences between secondary school and university and debated the one essential item they would take to their student house.
Before heading to lunch pupils were given a tour of the campus, which included the student union, shops, lecture theatres, Hull University’s new Medical Sciences building and library, which from its top floor has views ranging from Hull docks to the Humber Bridge.
The afternoon started with a session named the ‘Egg Drop Challenge’. Pupils were split into five groups and tasked with devising a solution for protecting an egg being dropped from a fixed height. Skills and technical knowledge they learned included teamwork, forces, gravity and mass, all while discussing the history of physics and Sir Isaac Newton.
Finally, pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions to current students at Hull University. Topics covered a range of topics including how students get to university and if they ever get homework or detentions.
Pupils said they enjoyed the visit and many are looking forward to returning in a few short years.
