A group of Year 9 pupils took part in SMart Futures Supergrid Activity Day with Humberside Engineering Training Association. Pupils learnt about the need to change from fossil fuel energy to renewable energy generation to meet future energy demands. Throughout the day pupils worked in teams representing a European Country to design, build and modify a wind turbine to maximise the energy generated from wind. A computer simulated random availability of wind, as pupils competed against each other to generate the most energy and sell their energy at a competitive price to make a profit. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activity, using their subject knowledge of Science, Technology and Mathematics to become a winning team. The experience provided a great opportunity for pupils to understand and experience the careers in the vastly growing renewable energy sector in the local area. The feedback from pupils was so positive the experience was repeated with 30 Year 8 pupils as part of Careers Week
