Mathematics at Malet Lambert allows pupils to expand their Mathematical intelligence by developing their mental mathematics and ability to problem solve. They will build on their prior learning and develop a deeper understanding of Mathematics. This in turn will allow pupils to flourish into better problem solvers with a confident and resilient attitude to mathematical concepts.
Facilities
The Mathematics department is fully staffed by specialists and are housed in 14 classrooms. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and various interactive resources available. The department has two sets of laptops which are used to enhance learning in lessons.
Courses
In Years 7 to 8 we teach Mathematics to the National Curriculum with an emphasis on mastery. In Year 9, 10 and 11 we offer Linear GCSE using the AQA examinations board. This consists of three exams taken at the end of the course. Pupils will either sit Foundation (Grades 1-5) or Higher (Grades 3-9) tiered papers.
During all years pupils are exposed to problem solving tasks to develop a key skill of resilience; essential to success in both GCSE exams and future study and employment.
Extra Curricular
The department takes part in a number of extra-curricular activities; these are either arranged on an as-required basis or are parts of projects. For example, at any given point in time there will be support or revision classes being run by individual staff and at various times during the year we will be preparing groups of pupils for various activities. In previous years our pupils have participated in:
- UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Intermediate and Junior challenges
- UKMT team challenge
- Enrichment sessions for year 11 and year 10
- Happy Puzzle Company
- Year 7 Cross school challenge
- Wilberforce and Wyke Booster sessions
- National Cipher Challenge
- Maths City Leeds
