  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

British Values at Malet Lambert

At Malet Lambert we aim to:

  • enable pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
  • enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
  • encourage pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour and to understand how they can contribute positively to society generally
  • enable pupils to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
  • further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions
  • encourage respect for other people and encourage respect for democracy, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.

What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education, which is essential for helping pupils develop as well-rounded, informed individuals.  At Malet Lambert, we promote SMSC throughout our Personal Development curriculum, which combines all subjects in the school.

British Values and SMSC in lessons

We address both British Values and SMSC throughout all subject areas and particularly through the PSHE and RS curricula. We cover the following themes:

  • Respecting the diversity of experience, history, and opinion
  • Exploring other cultures, faiths and approaches
  • Prejudice, discrimination and the law around protected characteristics
  • British Values and contributing to modern Britain
  • Understanding and exploring the values, beliefs and opinions of others
  • Developing personal values and beliefs to be proud of
  • Moral codes and recognising right from wrong
  • Conflict, consequences and conflict resolution
  • Imagination, creativity and critical analysis

Votes for Schools

Once a week during registration, pupils engage with the national Votes for Schools programme. These sessions allow students to impartially discuss challenging current affairs and topical issues and they are fully mapped against SMSC development and Modern British Values. Pupils vote on the weekly topic and these votes are recorded, ensuring their voices are heard and have an impact. Pupils can then compare their results to those of other pupils locally and nationally.

Citizens UK Relationship Reset

Malet Lambert and all schools in The Education Alliance have joined forces with Citizens UK Relationship Reset. The purpose of this collective effort is to hold key decision makers to account on three key areas around sexual harassment in society.

  1. Consent curriculum
  2. Public transport
  3. A charter for all schools and colleges to follow nationwide

Pupils from Malet Lambert have been central to the awareness, education and changes towards this issue and we have now entered into phase two of this journey.
