The ICT department at Malet Lambert provides discrete ICT to all years in the school through compulsory ICT lessons at KS3 & KS4. Our department brings together a wealth of experience with three of our staff coming from high level technical and management roles from a range of industries. This helps us provide in-depth technical expertise in ICT and expansive industry knowledge.

Facilities

The school has 6 dedicated ICT rooms across the site. All rooms have colour/b&w printing. We also have a set of digital video cameras and digital still cameras for the use of pupils as well as a suite of iPads. The department also has access to a ‘green screen’ photography kit and a vast array of industry standard software covering everything from the Microsoft Office Suite & Serif Suite to the latest Adobe Master Collection including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, etc.

Courses

GCSE Computer Science

Pupils study the units listed below, providing approximately 120 guided learning hours:

  • System Architecture
  • Memory & Storage
  • Networking
  • System Security
  • System Software
  • Ethical, Legal, Cultural & Environmental concerns.
  • Algorithms
  • Programming Techniques
  • Producing Robust Programs
  • Boolean Logic
  • Programming Languages & IDEs

All units are tested by two exam papers in Year 11. Paper 1 “Computer Systems” covers computer science theory, while Paper 2 “Computational thinking, algorithms and programming” tests a students ability to interpret and create computer programs.

Our KS3 Computing curriculum is diverse and is intended to deliver the key parts of the new ‘Computing’ national strategy as laid down by the government, while keeping some of the more traditionally interactive and engaging units covering everything from programming to digital image editing.

Extra Curricular

The department offers many opportunities for students to get involved with ICT outside lessons. Our after school Minecraft club is still very popular and it is our intention to run a number of other clubs after school, including a ‘coding’ club for those students interested in developing their computer programming skills further.
