At Malet Lambert we aim to help all pupils fulfil their potential and experience success through an educational environment, which responds to individual needs and stimulates and challenges each and every pupil.

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) is a high priority within our school, and is seen as crucial in preparing pupils to make decisions regarding the opportunities and challenges of adult and working life.

Information about potential post-16 opportunities, education pathways and career options is communicated via PSHE lessons, assemblies, curriculum lessons, face-to-face interviews, special events and via social media.

This involves:

• helping pupils to understand and interpret information
• providing information and answers to questions
• clarifying misunderstandings
• understanding their circumstances, abilities and targets
• advising them on their options or how to go about a given course of action
• identifying needs and signposting or referring young people who may need more in-depth guidance and support.

Advisory work is usually provided on a one-to-one basis but may also be provided in small or class groups.

Guidance aims to:

• support young people to better understand themselves and their needs
• confront barriers to understanding, learning and progression
• resolve issues and conflicts and to support them to develop new perspectives and solutions to problems and be able to better manage their lives and achieve their potential.

Careers Education is an important part of the school curriculum. It features a co-ordinated programme, which involves the whole school community: pupils, parents, staff and local business people. Learning co-ordinators, tutors, subject teachers and the Careers Leader work in partnership with the Careers Service to provide a well-developed approach to Careers, which is matched to the individual needs of the pupil.

The main aim of Careers Education at Malet Lambert is to ensure that all pupils are effective planners and managers of their own careers in a rapidly changing world of learning and work.

Our belief at Malet Lambert is that all pupils are entitled to Careers Education and Guidance which:

• is independent and impartial
• is easily accessible
• is structured and forms an integral part of pupils’ overall education
• recognises the contribution of others, particularly parents, to this process
• respects the confidentiality of personal information

The processes of informing, advising and guiding pupils are accorded a high priority within our school, and are seen as crucial in preparing pupils to make decisions regarding the opportunities and challenges of adult and working life.

Careers Education is an integral part of the PSHE programme for years 7 – 11. Subject teachers are also encouraged to talk with pupils about their career aspirations and can refer pupils to careers staff to gather further information.  Staff from local colleges and training providers attend parents’ evenings offering parents and pupils the opportunity to discuss progression routes after Year 11. In Year 10, pupils visit local colleges as part of the Taster Days programme.  They also have the opportunity to take part in the flourishing Work Experience Scheme.  In Year 11, representatives from colleges and training providers deliver presentations to pupils before pupils complete applications through logonmoveon.co.uk . If any pupil would like a careers interview to help them explore their future options, they can request this via their tutor, or contact our Careers Leader.  We aim to offer ALL Year 11 pupils a one-to-one careers interview, to support them with the transition to post-16 education and training.
